If you are interested in delving into the tombs of the lost Etruscan civilization and then unearthing your way back through the ruins of Rome, Sparta, and Athens, then this program is for you. As you walk in the footsteps of the great military leaders like Julius Caesar, Pompeii and Augustus you discover how their ruthless tactics of power politics are both revered and reviled to this day. Connections between the blood sports of the Colosseum to the modern MMA fighting lead to a comparison of the athletic competitions of Ancient Olympia to the modern-day Olympics. Each day we map human connections to our past as we discover how the ideas of Socrates, Plato, and Aristotle laid the foundation to our modern thought, and explore how the plays of Aeschylus, Sophocles and Euripides established the storyboards to today’s box office hits.

Program Preparation
Foundation Work

Days 1–5: Our online session is designed to connect students with their teachers and classmates, and to help prepare students for their term abroad. Students have access to the course website, where reading lists will be posted and are required to complete all prep work prior to departure to ensure they are ready to hit the ground running overseas.

Departure

Day 6: All of our programs begin at our study-abroad departure hub, Toronto’s Pearson International Airport. A short meeting is held at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel, Terminal 3, to distribute course packs, T-shirts and MEI Journals, and to clarify travel procedures. All students are responsible for making their own travel arrangements to the Sheraton Gateway Hotel.

Santorini

Days 34–41: Next, we sail to Santorini, once believed to be legendary Atlantis. Here, students begin our investigation of ancient myth and explore the formation of a collective understanding of self and culture through examinations of Homer’s epic tales of Achilles and Odysseus. Digging into their course reading list, students also do a comparative study of classical Greek texts with modern interpretations and adaptations. We conclude our time there with an epic hike along the caldera from Oia, to watch the sunset over the capital of Fira.

Mykonos

Days 41–50: Along the picturesque Platis Gialos beach on the island of Mykonos, students focus on academic writing and delve into the analysis of our core texts for English. Master classes in essay writing and small group book chats in funky cafés scattered throughout the island enable students to look critically at the writings of ancient and modern writers while improving their writing skills. Here, students write their final ISUs and exams before celebrating the end of their semester abroad under the bright stars of this magical island. Our adventure concludes with a brief and final stay back on the mainland in Athens.

Athens

Days 29–34: Our journey through the Peloponnese ends with a visit to Athena’s favourite city—Athens. Home to the birthplace of Western democracy, philosophy, art, architecture, literature, and history, Athens genuinely does have it all. Our classrooms during our stay are in the Theater of Dionysus, among the ruins of the Temple of Zeus, within the Agora, and high atop the Parthenon, while our evenings are spent exploring the Plaka and enjoying rooftop dinners in this ancient city.

The Peloponnese

Days 23–29: Continuing further east, students visit ancient Mycenae before arriving in the picturesque beach town of Tolo. This relaxed setting offers students a chance to focus their energy on presentations, group activities and creative writing. Students perform workout routines on the beach and test their limits on a day-long hike through the Lousios Gorge. We then consider Homer’s Iliad and Agamemnon’s return home after ten years of war to face the tragic consequences of his choices as we venture through the fortressed city of Ancient Mycenae.

Pompeii and Olympia

Days 21–23: As we travel down the coast of Italy before boarding a ferry to Greece, we stop in Pompeii where students end their investigation into the Roman world by looking at the explosion of Mount Vesuvius in 79 that buried the people of Pompeii in volcanic ash. After leaving Pompeii, students sail the Adriatic Sea aboard an overnight ferry to Greece. Upon our arrival in the Peloponnese, where Agamemnon and Achilles’ armies gathered before attacking Troy, students explore the archaeological ruins of Olympia, home to the first Olympic games. Here, students have the unique opportunity to lace up and run the original Olympic stadium’s track and visit one of the world’s most important archaeological museums.

Rome

Days 12–21: In Rome, we walk in the footsteps of the ancients as we follow the journey of Aeneas, one of the few survivors of the tragic sack of Troy, to the glorious city of Rome. This ‘Eternal City’ provides students with a visual and physical reminder of the layers of Rome’s history—all intermixed with high fashion, luxury cars, and delicious espresso bars! Whether writing morning notes on the steps of St. Peter’s Basilica, performing Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar in the Forum or sampling the world’s best gelato at the Trevi Fountain, in Rome, students witness the ghosts of history come alive.

It Felt Like I Was with Family

I was really nervous to leave my home for such a long time, but my anxiety quickly dissipated; within hours, it felt like I was with family. Amazing to See How I Improved

My entire life I have been stuck in a classroom where 40 students scramble to copy notes from a whiteboard. Travelling this summer with MEI gave me the opportunity to experience hands on learning, while immersed in many unique cultures. Changed My Life

This summer I travelled with the international business program. We went to New York, London, Paris, Hong Kong, and Beijing. I learnt so much about English and Business from doing things such as visiting the Globe Theatre and the New York Stock Exchange As someone who already appreciates school this trip really fuelled my love and appreciation for education. The main takeaway however, was getting the opportunity to see the world and learn how to live in it. In addition to this, I have learnt so much about myself. This experience filled with hard work, good friends, and being apart of the MEI family has changed my life. You Have to Go Beyond

I experienced so much in just three months. I travelled to six countries, met new people and learned about the world. It was absolutely surreal to have a World Issues lesson at the Forbidden City in Beijing and to ride in a Tuk Tuk to get to class. School is so much more than the four walls of a classroom; you have to go beyond, see the world and experience your learning firsthand. That is what education is. I am so grateful for these moments. I know I have grown so much from this experience and I will carry this knowledge of the world with me for the rest of my life.

This summer, I had the experience of a lifetime and visited six major business capitals within 35 days. Not only did I learn about the important aspects of business, such as investments and real estate ,but also about myself. Exceeded Expectations

My MEI summer on Trek Through Europe completely exceeded the expectations I had before the trip. Not only did I make amazing new friends that I’m still extremely close with, but I got to experience a whole new way of learning that would have never been available in a normal classroom setting. Extremely Fulfilling

When our adventure to Europe was cancelled due to the pandemic, I, and presumably my peers, were crushed. I was initially skeptical of the paradox of online abroad school, but attempted to maintain my usual optimism as we explored this unpredicted learning route. As soon as I met my teachers, my positivity and curiosity skyrocketed. I can’t imagine what I would have retained had we departed on our trip because the online curriculum was extremely fulfilling. My teachers were engaging and energetic, and their enthusiasm inevitably rubbed off on each student. That a teacher who had expected to bond through face to face connections was able to seamlessly cultivate these bonds while we resided states and countries apart is astounding. It may not have been the journey that I signed up for, but I learned more about myself and my peers than I imagined was possible.

Seeing Where Things Actually Happened

We were talking about visual learning in class today and this summer, I learned that visual learning isn’t just using building blocks to understand multiplication in math…it is SEEING the Theatre of Dionysus while you learn about it. Excellent Staff

The staff on this trip were excellent. I certainly never felt, at all, that I was buying this mark. Nothing Short of Exceptional

My experience with MEI was nothing short of exceptional. The hotels we stayed at offered comfort and culture, connecting us to the cities we stayed in and the culture of the country, not that we spent much time sitting still! This summer, I formed meaningful friendships that I will carry with me well into adulthood. The excursions we went on were fantastic: zip lining through the Costa Rican jungle, white water rafting, cave diving and seeing Mayan ruins and snorkelling in the Belizean barrier reef to name a few were led by qualified guides who not only lead us on the activities but helped us to appreciate the experience.

As students we were given time to explore the cities ourselves and bring back souvenirs for our friends and family to remember the trip by, not that any of us would need a keychain to remember our life-changing, 5 weeks together as the friendships and experiences were more than enough to remember our time together.

This past summer, I went on the English Through the Ages program through Europe. This experience was better than I ever could have imagined. The friends I made taught me so much and the teachers we had were so helpful and supportive. The places we went, the people I met, and the adventures we had will be things that stay with me for the rest of my life. I love going to school, but this summer I learned that even more than that, I love being able to learn in the real world. An Experience that I Will Forever Hold On To

I thought that going to a foreign country for the first time with 35 strangers would be absolutely terrifying, but I was extremely wrong. Considering your teachers as friends, meeting people and feeling as if you have known them your whole life when in reality, it’s been 35 days is what MEI is about. Being immersed in a history rich place like Europe with teachers that are truly passionate about what they do, makes you want to learn. Not only do you learn about the world wars, Napoleon and valuable writing skills, you also learn unteachable life skills. I could never list all of the memories I have from this trip, but between seeing your teacher perform on the stage of the Globe theatre in London (our first stop), and listening to heartfelt poems we all wrote about each-other at our last day in Prague, I am sure you can see how amazing the trip was. Overall, my MEI trip was an experience that I will forever hold on to.

More Confident and Independant

MEI changed my life. It helped me open up, learn to adapt to a fast and constantly changing environment, and gave me an opportunity to learn in the world’s most beautiful places. The Leap is Something I will Never Regreat

I had the experience of a lifetime. I loved every single minute of my trip. Taking the leap to take grade twelve courses while abroad isn’t an easy decision, yet, the leap is something that I will never regret taking. My experience with MEI was life-changing. I never thought I could learn so much about the world and myself in thirty-five days. The teachers were incredible; they were always there to support us whichever way they could. Every day there was a new experience, whether it was watching Bastille Day fireworks in Paris, or dancing in the English Gardens in Munich or even writing an essay in the peaceful Swiss Alps. My Skills Improved Immensely

In the winter/spring of 2020, I was supposed to travel with MEI Academy and explore Europe, but instead, because of COVID-19, we did our semester online. Nonetheless, MEI managed to make this experience worthwhile. They did an amazing job at mirroring the feeling that comes with travelling and learning simultaneously, This is easily the most enriching course I’ve ever taken; my writing skills have improved immensely, and my knowledge of history is now unmatched by my family and friends. The Best Preparation

Our son chose to complete not just one but two summer school programs with MEI International Academy because the experience was truly so amazing that it warranted going back again for a second course. As a parent, I think giving him the opportunity to attend MEI Academy has been one of the best things I have done for his personal growth and development. I am so impressed with how much more independent, resilient and self-aware he has become as a result of his MEI experiences. The MEI teachers are phenomenal, and they bring a contagious energy and enthusiasm to what they are doing so that students can’t help but be excited and engaged in their learning. The academic bar and expectations are high. The close connections between the students and teachers that are established by travelling together allowed my son to have a great dialogue with them and be comfortable in putting himself out there to take more risks. The teachers provided continuous support, gave meaningful feedback, mentored and challenged him in a way so that he could reflect, improve and produce his best work. With so much activity packed into a day he had no choice but to get better at time management, working efficiently and prioritizing tasks. Ian discovered his passion for business on this last trip and it has become clear that this is what he wants to pursue at university. Travelling and studying with peers has been the best preparation both academically and personally for his postsecondary studies. His time with MEI allowed him to gain the confidence and belief that he can successfully achieve any of his goals. I learned more through online MEI courses than any high school course I’ve taken in school

I unfortunately couldn’t go out on the kingdoms and empires trip due to covid-19 but instead I did online school with MEI. The online classes through Zoom were very interactive and educational. I got super close with my fellow students in my small class and was always able to reach my teacher for any questions I had. We learned through virtual tours, lectures and group activities. I enjoyed the learning style and can easily say I learned more through online MEI courses than any high school course I’ve taken in school.
